Carla put a lot of very interesting material about Brazil's "World Cup Fever" online in the section called "Stereotypes about Brazil and Brazilians"; this is in the "links of interest" on the left side of the blog. I think you might enjoy taking a look at it.
I especially enjoyed all the photos that she put there.

Carnaval and fútbol (soccer) also come to my mind when I think of Brazil, and I also agree that it's a country filled with beauty.
I don't know anything about the soap opera Xica. Maybe you and/or one of the CTJ students can tell me a little about it.

The first thing that comes to my mind of the word Brazil is a very famous soccer player known around the world. Pele, who is a model to follow for everyone who wants to become a professional in sports. Since he started playing soccer he was very diligent and always did the best increasing his goal scores in all the soccer games. In addition, he was called the King Pele for his extraordinary speed and flexibily to move in the field. Pele is very admired by people because he never used illegal drugs and had a clear professional soccer career. Pele is an icon in soccer and he belongs to the world.
bye,
Susi.
When I hear Brazil, I think about soccer. I think about who are the main soccer player, but I dont have any idea about them
The first thing that comes to my mind when i here Brazil is soccer. I know people their are true fans, they love to watch and play the sport. In America soccor is not the most popular sport like in brazil and other european countries . I find soccer a hard sport and people who are good are very talented.
Dear all,
Very interesting to notice that even though this is a very rich country in terms of cultural aspects and diversity, for most of you soccer is what springs to your mind when you hear the word "Brazil"! Of course the sport is part of our list of national passion, but it´s not true for everybody...I´d say that the millions of Brazilians really stop to watch soccer every four years during the World Cup (certainly my case!). You can see the pictures I took as mentioned by Dennis at:
Brazil and Brazilians Blog
As for the soap opera, Maria, do you mean "Xica da Silva"? It was a popular one in Brazil. Interesting aspect, soap operas...In Brazil, most of the families get together after watching the news to watch the "Novela das 8" (Prime Time Soap Opera). We even discuss it the following day. My boss, who is an American, records it when she has any appointment that will prevent her from watch it. I´ve never stopped to think about it, but Soap Operas are, indeed, part of our culture! Did you know that we export our Brazilian Soap Operas even to China? They last around six months and they are carefully produced. The Soap Opera actors are really famous here...
I guess I could spend hours talking about my country and culture, but I´m much more curious to know what your impressions are!
Oh, by the way, I can´t play soccer at all...I´m practicing tennis!
If you want to know a little bit more about us, check out what my students have to say about our country:

Brizil..!!!! oh yeah...PELE' king of soccer..!! and i also like Maradona too but in the way he played soccer, not the way he spend his life. Another thing I think about is "Zamba Dancing". exotic and sexiest.
Hi,
the soap operas, in Brazil, are very popular and everybody (poor or rich) see it every night. The soap operas talk about many subjects that exists in our lifes, like adoption, racialism, drugs, alcoholism, and other themes that causes controversials. Also, people use this programs to relax at home. Bye,
Hi, Carla and Mariana.
It's been very interesting to read about the popularity of soap operas in Brasil. I think they're more popular there than they are re,
In the U.S., soap operas are mostly shown during the day and they're mostly watched by people who work at home (such as housewives). I remember that one of my grandmothers used to watch "the soaps" all day long as she ironed, cleaned, cooked, and did other chores around her house.
For an overview of current U.S. soaps (including some with a long, long history), see THIS LINK.
During "prime time" (evening TV), movies and situation comedies are very common. In the past couple of years or so, "reality" shows such as "Top Chef," "Project Runway," "Survivor," and "The Amazing Race" have also become quite popular. To learn more about "reality" shows, see THIS LINK.
Best wishes—
Dennis

In the first paragraph of my post above, I meant to say, "I think they're more popular there than they are here.
